EZPZ Hosting goes rebootless!

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Offering 100% uptime is always our goal, however when it came to critical kernel updates to fix security issues we have no choice but to reboot servers. However, thanks to Ksplice there is now a solution.

Keeping up to date with kernel updates is extremely important and often fixes important security holes. In 2009 there were 16 released, each requires a reboot which takes around 15 minutes to complete. This means there would have been a total of 4 hours downtime just to update the kernel. Ksplice allows us to perform these updates without rebooting and without any impact on performance.

The other advantage is that we can apply patches instantly. We no longer need to plan ahead and give a few days notice of an impending reboot, during this time the server may be open to an exploit causing obvious security problems.

Ksplice is now installed on all shared, reseller and VPS servers. It is also included free of charge on all managed dedicated servers

VPS now with Snapshot Backups!

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

We’re pleased to announce that our VPS servers now come complete with snapshot backups.

This new feature allows any VPS user to click ‘Central Backups’ within their VPS control panel and take a snapshot of their server. This will then be transferred off-site and kept indefinitely, the server can also be restored from this backup within seconds with the click of a button.

The complete server is backed up including all files, databases, configuration settings and any applications installed on the server. This is ideal for taking a quick backup before performing a software upgrade or new installation incase the work doesn’t go as planned.

We allow each server to keep one snapshot by default, if a second is generated it would simply overwrite the first. However if you would like the option to keep more backups on our central server, please contact us.

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Some of you forum regulars may have noticed we have added a new section to our forums over the last few days.

Our new private customer forums allow you to interact with other EZPZ customers in private, away from search engines and other prying eyes. This allows you to share tips, ask questions and discuss other aspects of hosting in complete privacy- something our reseller customers have been wanting for a while.

As well as getting tips from other clients, we will be posting details of upcoming features within these forums, we’ll also be running customer polls to see what you’d like to see and getting your opionion on changes we’re considering.

To get access to the customer only forums, please visit http://forum.ezpzhosting.co.uk and request access in the access forum.

Firewall Unblocker

Monday, January 11th, 2010

We run a very strict firewall to help protect against brute force attacks, port scanning and more. This also means legitimate visitors can also be accidentally blocked from accessing the server.

We now have a new firewall unblocker within our client area. This allows you to automatically remove your IP address from the firewall without having to submit a support ticket. Reseller clients are also able to search by IP address and unblock their clients automatically.

To use this new feature, simply log into your client area, click ‘My Products and Services’ and click the icon next to your package. You will then see a button to unblock your IP or a box to enter a clients IP address into. After clicking ‘Unblock’ your IP will be removed within 10 minutes.

Now Gumblar Protected

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

The Gumblar virus has caused a huge amount of damage to websites around the world. The virus steals passwords from FTP software such as Dreamweaver and Filezilla to upload a modified version of a webpage which would be used to infect other visitors PCs.

Regular virus scanners such as ClamAV would not pick up the threat as the virus isn’t actually uploaded to our servers. Therefore we’ve had to come up with another way to protect our clients.

With the new protection in place any files that are uploaded via FTP are scanned instantly for various keywords or phrases. If a threat is found a number of things will happen to secure your account -

  • The file is moved to a quarantine for an administrator to review
  • The IP address of the uploader is blocked at our firewall
  • The password on the account is changed
  • The FTP connection is killed
  • Our administrators are notified so we can perform other security checks on your account.

If we do get notified of a client account being used in this way we will contact you and ask you to scan your PC with an updated virus scanner immediately.

If you have any questions, feel free to let us know.

Our firewall and blocked IPs

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

As some of you may know, we run a fairly strict firewall which will automatically block your IP address for too many failed login attempts. This is to stop brute-force attempts against your cPanel, email and other areas of your account.

If your IP address is blocked this will result in the server blocking all requests from your address and making it appear as if the server is down. To rectify this we would normally require you to submit a support ticket, however we now have the facility to do this automatically.

If you find your IP is blocked, you can now remove your IP from the ‘My Products and Services’ section of the client area. If you are on a static IP you can also request that we whitelist your address to prevent further blocks.

We will also be creating a WHMCS module for resellers so their clients are also able to request removal and permanent whitelisting.

WHMCS Autoinstaller
